SUCO Fire

All but the third floor residents will return to SUNY Oneonta's Matteson Hall on Friday, just over a week since a fire displaced over 100 residents on Jan. 16. The university said in a statement that students will begin moving back in at 10 a.m. Displaced students have been staying at the Oneonta Holiday Inn as the college worked to clean Matteson Hall.

SUNY Oneonta issued two updates via its official Facebook page late Saturday night as it works to clean Matteson Hall after a fire heavily damaged the third floor and destroyed a suite Wednesday.

This week, as everybody knows by now, there was a dorm fire at SUNY Oneonta.  A "dorm room fire."  Sounds kind of over dramatic doesn't it?  Just a dorm room fire. Maybe an errant candle.  Or a tossed cigarette butt. The fire was extinguished in a half hour...

Students or parents of students whose personal property was damaged or destroyed as a result of the Wednesday fire at SUNY Oneonta's Matteson Hall have several options when filing a claim for reimbursement. Head to SUNY Oneonta's newly-launched information website for complete details:

SUNY Oneonta displaced students staying at the Holiday Inn in Oneonta will have the option to take an Oneonta Public Transport bus from the hotel to the campus and back free of charge. The bus schedule is as follows:

SUNY Oneonta will pay for the students displaced by Wednesday's dormitory fire to stay at the Oneonta Holiday Inn until long-term housing options become available. Oneonta Public Transport has agreed to provide transportation to and from the hotel to students free of charge.

Investigators from the City of Oneonta Fire Department deemed that the fire that caused damage to Matteson Hall on the SUNY Oneonta campus started as the result of a malfunction and the improper use of an electric plug strip in a suite bedroom on the third floor.
