Voters in school districts across the state head to the polls today to vote on school budgets, fill board of education seats and approve purchase for the coming school year. In Oneonta, school Superintendent David Rowley says the Board of Education had a lot of tough choices to make this year in the proposed budget, which represents a 2.7 percent total tax levy increase.

The Oneonta City School District Board of Education last night approved a budget of $33.7 million, which calls for a tax levy increase of 2.7 percent. Interim Superintendent David Rowley is optimistic that this spending plan will also have the approval of the public.

Over 100 people attended the Oneonta City School District Board of Education meeting held at the Greater Plains Elementary School on Wednesday. With the recent New York State budget being passed, Interim Superintendent David Rowley says the school district now knows how much it will receive in state aid.

The Oneonta City School District Board of Education voted unanimously for the reconfiguration of the middle school at its regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday night. The vote comes after the idea to move sixth grade to the middle school was brought to the table at the last meeting. Effective in the fall 2013, grades 6-8 will all be housed in the Oneonta middle school.

Two Oneonta residents who are concerned about the safety of children when in school have started a group called the Guardian Angel Project. Carrie Grace and Guy Weideman have made it their goal to ensure children are as safe as possible by lobbying for changes in the Oneonta City School District System.
