Here is memory about an incredible American you might enjoy hearing about...

I met Clayton " Peg Leg"  Bates (1907-1998) in the 1990s when he received an honorary degree from SUNY Delhi.  I sang the National Anthem at his ceremony.  After, he whispered in my ear "Good job on that song, man!".

Following the presentation of his degree by college officials Peg Leg treated the huge crowd of more than 1,000 in attendance with a one-legged tap dance performance.  He was well into his 80s by then.  It was a mesmerizing performance and he received a huge ovation from the students.

When he returned to his seat next to me I whispered into his ear, "Good job on that dance, man!"

Peg Leg Bates, the world's only one-legged tap dancer. He lost his leg in a farming accident when he was just thirteen.  He appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 19 times, more than any other dancer  He lived the last several decades of his life in the Catskills and is buried near his home in Ellenville, N.Y.

An amazing and inspirational figure.  A friendly guy. Truly unforgettable.  Take a look! You won't believe this.
