On this day in 1939, singer Kate Smith recorded the venerable Irving Berlin tribute to America...."God Bless America.."  She had first introduced the song on her Armistice Day show on radio in 1938.

Kate Smith would forever be associated with this patriotic song and she sang it literally thousands of times over her 60-year career.  Late in her life the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team "adopted" Kate and the song as their team mascots.  On several occasions Kate Smith went to Philadelphia and sang it live to the hockey fans in the City of Brotherly Love.

Take a look at this exciting moment from the Stanley Cup playoffs in Philadelphia, May 19, 1974...

Happy Birthday 'God Bless America'!
