The Federal Emergency Management Agency has granted major federal disaster status to counties hit by flooding earlier this month and in June.

The disaster status means that there will be help from Washington with fixing infrastructure like washed out roads and bridges as well as damaged sewer and water pipes.

The exact amount to be spent is not yet known but, Gov. Andrew Cuomo had told President Barack Obama damage to public infrastructure exceeded $32.7 million.

Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties are among the counties eligible for assistance.
