The city of Norwich and Chenango County have expanded the NY Alert system to a local resource for emergency preparedness and response to your phones.

The new free app is designed for those who are not at home during an emergency. The system will alert iPhone and Android users of all kinds of information pertaining to Chenango County residents.

A. Wesley Jones, emergency management director for the city of Norwich, says the system will also alert citizens to other information.

"We've incorporated a lot of information into this application," he said. "During the winter, there's school closings. There's also a link to NYSEG power outages. There's a wealth of information out there for people with this app."

Jones says the system was designed to be used by the increasingly mobile society we live in as a way to reach more of the public.

The app is the first of its kind in New York, and just one of a few nationwide. The app is free and can be downloaded at app stores on line by searching Norwich or Chenango.
