Binghamton University officials say they are cooperating with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil rights after being placed on a list of 55 universities and colleges to be investigated for their handling of sexual assault complaints.

The university is not commenting on the specifics of the case, citing the sensitivity of the issue.

The DOE says it is conducting the investigations to ensure all schools are in compliance with federal law.

The investigation does not necessarily indicate there was any mishandling of any complaints.

Four other schools in New York are on the DOE investigation under Title Nine requirements includes Hobart and William Smith College.

Federal funds hinge on meeting the Title Nine guidelines that also require females to have equal access to sports.
