Singer/songwriter Joe South  has died of a heart attack at the age of 72.

Although he was best known as a songwriter, he also scored big as a recording artist with his 1969 hit "Games People Play."  South also had a hand in giving the Baby Boom generation songs such as Aretha Franklin's  "Chain of Fools" and Lynn Anderson's "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden."

His signature song, "Boondocks," sold a million copies for Royal and reached Number 9 on the Billboard Charts in 1965.
