A big barn fire in Chenango County at the Broome County line is drawing attention from traffic on the nearby Interstate.

New York State Police Patrols on Interstate 88 reported seeing the massive fire on New York State 41 in the Town of Afton at about 3:50 a.m. November 19

Chenango County Emergency Services officials say they believe the barn houses machinery and not livestock, but that could not be confirmed.

Broome County Emergency Services officials say firefighters from Harpursville were being called to assist Afton at the scene at 115 State Highway 41 between Bettsburg and Merritt Roads.

Officials in Chenango County say the fire was reported by both the owner and a passerby.

Traffic is expected to be impacted in the region for most of the morning and there could be issues on Interstate 88 if drivers slow down to look at the activity off the highway.

As of 4 a.m. November, 19 there had been no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire will be investigated later in the day.
