Baby Boomer Alert! In The 1950s Every House Had One Of These. Why?

There must have been thousands of these cheesy  things made in the 1950s.  Anybody who had a TV console had one of these oddities sitting up on top of it.  A lamp in the shape (usually) of an animal or bird.  Most were cougars or panthers.  In my house in the old days it was a mallard about to take flight. Why? We have no idea.

It was kitschy and weird. And I have no idea why we all had to have one of these things.  Oh well, I hear they are pricey collectibles now.  Wonder if my dear old Mom still has ours?  "Oh, Ma...!"
