Those who are out shoveling may have noticed there's a lot more snow on the ground this year than normal. The National Weather Service in Binghamton confirms it.

Records indicate that there has been an average of 76 inches of snow through last week, 21 inches more than a normal seasonal snowfall. Based on 30 years of data collection, the average is around 55 inches.

Aside from snow days for schools, the heavy snowfall also costs state and local governments and businesses more money to remove and deal with other effects of the snow.

The weather service says the last big snow season was in the winter of 2010-2011 when a record 117.3 inches of snow fell on the region.
