Ryan Lewis Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter After Fatal Afton Crash
Ryan Lewis, 22 of Harpursville, was formally charged Monday with second degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated following a crash that took the life of Joelyn Sines, 24, also of Harpursville.
Troopers say Lewis was driving north on Afton Lake Road Sunday at 2:20 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, a 2006 Subaru Impreza, while negotiating a curve in the roadway. The vehicle exited the roadway and struck a tree with the passenger side.
Sines, a front seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chenango County Medical Examiner.
Backseat passengers, Mitchell Birch and Caleb Gregory, both of Afton, were transported to Wilson Regional Medical Center, where they remain in stable condition. Lewis was transported to the same hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date. The investigation is continuing.
