U.S.S. Otsego…How Did it Get its Name?
What a wandering ship this U.S.S. Otsego was.
It was "born" in Germany in 1902 as a passenger ship called the Prinz Frederich. After World War I it was transferred to the U.S. Navy where it was christened the U.S.S. Otsego. It served as a U.S. troop transport ship during World War II.
After the war it was sold the the Russian navy where they christened the ship the Urals.
I have often wondered how it got its name the Otsego. Any clues? Maybe somebody high up in the U.S. Navy was from our area? I also thought what it would have been like to have been a seaman from say Milford or Unadilla or Oneonta who found themselves being transported to the war front on a ship named after their home county?
Any idea how this ship got its name?
