Maj. General Harold Greene was shot and killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday.  It is alleged that he was killed when an Afghan being trained by the U.S. military opened fire on a group of coalition service personnel.  17 soldiers from several countries were wounded in the attack.  Maj. Gen. Greene was a two-star general and is the highest ranking military officer to die in a combat zone since the Vietnam War.

Greene was a native of Albany who graduated from Guilderland High School.  He was also a graduate of RPI (class of 1980).  He was promoted to the rank of major general by President Obama in 2012.

Maj. Gen. Greene was 52 years old.
