It took him a while to get his first and second hits.

At the age of 29, Bobby Vinton was still seeking a follow-up to his 1963 hit "Blue Velvet,"  that "magic song" to put him on top.  He found "Roses Are Red" in a record studio reject pile!  He used his own money to record it and then hired a girl to drive to every local DJ and present them with the record and dozen red roses.

And it worked.

"Roses Are Red" stayed at the top of the Billboard charts for four weeks!  Here he is in one of his very first television appearances (on the TV dance show "Shindig").
