I have never had one.  I will one day.  For sure!

The Louisiana King Cake is a Southern tradition dating back centuries.  It is a coffee cake ring decorated in traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, yellow and green.  The cake is served during the Christmas season and is most popular in the Gulf Coast as a party item served around Mardi Gras, from Galveston to New Orleans.

The cake is usually baked with a little trinket (sometimes a tiny baby Jesus) inside.  The lore is that whoever gets the cake slice with the trinket in it will have good luck for the following year.

There are many historic bakeries that continue to create these delicacies.  Click here for the website of one of the best  (it also has an online order form).

And hey...if you adventurous enough, why don't you make one yourself.  Take a look...it's not that difficult!
