Environmentalists say that tighter smokestack regulations have helped many Adirondack lakes recover from the effects of acid rain. The Adirondack Council is helping put on the acid rain conference Thursday in Saratoga Springs. Speakers at the conference will discuss current research, legal actions and regulatory changes. The Adirondack Council estimates that 700 of the Adirondack Park's 2,800 major lakes and ponds had been polluted to the point where native aquatic life could no longer survive. The group says recovery has been uneven.
