Dry Weather Fuels Otsego County Brush Fires Keeping Crews Busy

Unfortunately there have been some reminders in Otsego County as to why The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has a burn ban in place through May 14.

Yesterday afternoon, I heard Oneonta Fire Department trucks fly by my house and later learned from the Oneonta Fire Department Facebook page that firefighters were responding to what they called a small fire in a wooded area along the road near 233 Marble Road in the town of Oneonta. It's not known at this time how the fire started.

Earlier in the week, on the morning of May 11, it was a much more serious wildfire situation in the woods near the intersection of State highway 7 and Stone House Road in the Town of Maryland according to a statement from Otsego County Emergency Services.

The report revealed that dry conditions along with wind and steep terrain all contributed to a significant fire that took 18 area fire companies to get under control and it took most of the day to do it. Regarding this fire, it's also not known what caused the flames to spark the blaze. See some photos from the Oneonta Fire Department, one of the fire crews who battled that fire.

Ironically, with the last day of the NYS burn ban coming up tomorrow, it's fortunate that the weather report from the National Weather Service of Binghamton shows a good chance of rain both tomorrow and Sunday. Talk about perfect timing!

Susquehanna SPCA Miracle Puppies

The Susquehanna SPCA helped to rescue a puppy mill female dog, a 6-year-old Siberian husky named "Candy" that was retired from breeding. Through an alliance with Furever Friends Dog Rescue of WNY, a nonprofit group in Ohio that saves retired dogs from puppy mills, the dog was being cared for at the Cooperstown shelter and being prepared for adoption. Part of that process is to spay the dog before adopting it out. A big surprise happened during the surgery - the very thin dog was found to be carrying inside her a litter of four puppies. Three of them were found to be still alive and were saved. What a miracle!
