Nuclear Fallout Shelters Found in Watkins Glen Middle School [VIDEO]

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Two fully-stocked, Cold War-era nuclear fallout shelters have been discovered in the basement of an upstate New York school.

A report in a local newspaper states that the custodial staff at Watkins Glen Middle School led library media specialist Maggie Field to the long forgotten shelters, where she found boxes of emergency supplies neatly stacked in boxes.

The shelters were among the many established across the U.S. in the 1950s and '60s when Americans feared a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union.

Few at the school knew they had two in the basement. Even the local emergency management director says he didn't know they were there.

Field wants to donate some of the shelter supplies to the local historical society and offer the rest to history teachers for use in their lessons on the Cold War.
