Blue-Green Algae Found in Oneida Lake

SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. (AP) — Officials in central New York are advising people to be careful after blooms of blue-green algae were found in parts of Oneida Lake.

The Oneida County Health Department tells local media outlets the blooms are near the north shore in Oswego County, but winds and tides can move them around.

People should avoid swimming or wading near the algae or surface scum pets should be kept away from drinking the water.

The algae produce toxins that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin, eye or throat irritation or breathing problems.

Health officials were continuing to monitor the blooms Wednesday and said they'd issue another warning if the algae are found near popular recreations areas around the village of Sylvan Beach.

The algae thrive in water rich with nutrients from run-off.
