After more rain on Monday and into the overnight, Sherburne is experiencing significant flooding along Main St., which is closed.

The flooding forecast for the Chenango River has changed from moderate to severe. The flood warning continues for the Chenango River at Sherburne.

At 10 p.m. Monday the stage was 10.4 feet. The flood stage Is 8.5 feet. The river will not fall below flood stage until after 2 p.m. Thursday and crested at 11.4 feet.

Three feet of water has inundated Main St. in Sherburne. As of 5:30 a.m., the City of Norwich and Chenango County Emergency Operations Center issued the following status on its official Facebook page:

Flood Update - 5:30 am

 

- Flash flooding in the northern part of Chenango County ended late last night.

- The main area of concern this morning is the Chenango River. In Sherburne it crested early this morning at a major flood stage of 11.14'. It is currently falling and will continue to do so throughout the day, provided we don't see additional rain in this area.

- The Chenango River continues to rise at points to the south. In Norwich it is currently at 9.35' and still forecast to rise to around 11' later today, which is just slightly higher than it reached on Friday night. In Oxford it is at 16.55' and rising, which is just slightly above where it crested on Saturday.

- The Chenango River in Greene is still below flood stage but is expected to reach a minor flood stage later this afternoon. Minimal impacts are expected there.

Most roads that were closed last night have reopened. State DOT reports North Main Street (State Hwy 12) in the Village of Sherburne remains closed but Classic Street has reopened as a detour route. If you are headed south on State Hwy 12B, you will have to cross at Howard Road to get over to State Hwy 12 and then Classic Street. The intersection of State Hwys 12/12B near Skip's IGA is closed but is expected to reopen this morning.

South Main Street (State Highway 12) in Sherburne is open, per DOT. State Highway 80 in Sherburne and State Highway 8 in New Berlin/Columbus are also open.
