Today was National Dog Day.

The day was invented several years ago as a way to raise awareness of adopting "shelter dogs" or "rescue dogs."  Lord knows there are plenty of them.  My dog, Stella, is a shelter dog.  I got her 7 years ago from the Heart of the Catskills Humane Center in Delhi.

I was never a dog person but Stella has taught me a lot.  She is as much a part of the family now as I am (sometimes more, I think).  She is a great companion, a trusted friend who listens attentively to your problems and asks nothing in return except maybe a treat.

If you are looking for a dog for your life, please consider any of the area shelters which are filled to over brimming.  I am sure you will find your furry friend waiting for you there.

In tribute to National Dog Day I want to share what I think is the funniest and most poignant dog video around today.  Here you will see a black and white border collie who wants nothing more than to play "fetch" with the stranger in front of him. The dog repeatedly brings the stick over, playfully encourages the man to pick it up and throw it for the dog.  The dog tries everything to get his"playmate" to respond.  But to no avail.

Little does the dog know that the man is actually a statue!  How sweet is this...
