The Hartwick College Department of Nursing will present the 2019 O’Connor Chair Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 in Slade Theatre, Yager Hall, on the College campus. The presentation will feature two distinguished speakers offering unique perspectives on the topic of “The Landscape of Bullying in Rural America.” Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Jean Van Kingsley, RN, MS, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, is an advanced nurse practitioner with more than 25 years of practice. She is board certified in family health and psychiatric family health and currently works primarily with patients hospitalized at a local inpatient psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. Van Kingsley has lectured at family practice conferences and psychiatric conferences, and has served as an adjunct faculty member in the nursing departments of both Binghamton University and Hartwick College.

Noelle Granger has a master’s degree in Literacy and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education, and has been a special education teacher for 19 years in rural New York school districts. After teaching for 18 years at Franklin Central School, she is currently teaching her first year at Walton Central School.

Granger has been dedicated to improving school climate and is very passionate about building community within rural schools. In 2010, she started the “Alternatives to Violence” program in Franklin. The program focuses on building community through teaching students conflict resolution strategies and empowering them to look for the good in others. She has witnessed a tremendous impact on the school climate as a result. Granger currently runs the program at Walton Central with Franklin students attending the workshops.

The O’Connor Chair Lecture series, endowed by the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation, brings notable speakers on health and nursing-related themes to the campus each spring and fall for the benefit of nursing students and faculty, and the Hartwick College and greater Oneonta communities.
