This week is national fire prevention week, and fire departments across Chenango County will holding open houses and other activities to raise public awareness to the threat of fire and how to prevent it.

The week began with a pancake breakfast at the Smithville Fire Department on Sunday.

The Oxford Fire Department will hold an open house at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while the Sherburne Fire Department open house is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Then, the Norwich Fire Department will hold their open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

National fire prevention week was established in 1925 and is the longest running health and safety observance on record.
