The New York Power Authority announced Thursday the completion of a report on energy use in state government buildings.

The report will be used to form a baseline for measuring future progress of the governor's Build Smart NY initiative.

When the program is implemented, it will increase the energy efficiency of those buildings by 20 payers and save taxpayers $100 million annually.

The energy efficient move will also help eliminate eight million metric tons of greenhouse gases, which is the equivalent of removing 1.6 million cars from the road.
