I had the wonderful opportunity to be a "guest lecturer" at SUNY Oneonta today for a class titled "News Reporting in the Internet Age."  I had a great time.

Two dozen students from all over the state (and beyond) listened as I told my own personal story as a writer, broadcaster and journalist, and they really seemed "fired up."  I told them, and I truly believe it, that if they really wanted to become a writer that they could start.  Literally tonight.  Baby steps, get your thoughts together. Find a motivational theme, journal your memories and feelings.  Mute their phones. Sharpen their pencils and sharpen their minds.

I gave them the tools, shared my experiences and encouraged them to find their own voice and tell their own story.  They were young, bright, attentive, curious and a perfect example of the next generation about to hit the ground running.

I want to thank Mark Simonson for inviting me to come and meet his students. Mark does a great job and I hope to be invited back.
