I have been reading about Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius since I was a kid (see the comic book above).  The story has always fascinated me.

I have also bee to Italy three times but never to Pompeii.  I think I need to put it on my bucket list.

Not only is the region gorgeous (not far from Naples) but the story this historic city tells is awesome.  Thousands of tourists come to Pompeii every year to see what is left, preserved, of that tragic event in AD 79.  Historians have called Pompeii one "of the world's greatest treasure troves of a time centuries ago."  Because much of the city was buried in ash, no air or light has affected the ruins for hundreds of years.

Tours by well informed docents bring the excitement and tragedy to life in a series of inexpensive guided tours around the city.

Some might call it macabre or sad and dark, but to me a visit to Pompeii sounds like a history buff's dream!

Pompeii...I hope I get to see you some day!
