On this day in 1984, Clara Peller, a woman who had never acted before, starred in one of the most iconic television commercials of the 1980s.

Clara and two of her elderly girl friends, are shown trying to "find the beef" in a fictional fast food burger place called "Big Bun."  She is heard bellowing in her foghorn voice "Where's The Beef?" to nobody in particular.  Of course the idea is that "the beef" can be found only at Wendy's Hamburgers, whom she was representing in this commercial.  The phrase caught on!

The phrase was seen on shirts, hats, bumper stickers, coffee mugs and just about everything else imaginable.  The phrase even made it into the 1984 presidential campaign when former-Vice President Walter Mondale famously challenged opponent Gary Hart in a televised primary, "Where's The Beef" (regarding Hart economic propositions).

Clara Peller was 80-years old when she filmed this, her first ever acting effort.  She only lived another five years before passing, but during that time little Clara Peller was the most famous advertising spokesperson in America.  Does anybody remember this commercial?
