Every day of every month is a "food holiday."  We know these special days are promoted by food growers, companies and food business experts.  Well, in any case, today is a good one!

The grilled cheese sandwich has been around for as long as there has been cheese, bread and heat!  The sandwich really took off in America during the Great Depression when the sandwich, a poor man's dream meal, was actually the featured highlight of many a Sunday supper.

For baby boomers it was always paired with tomato soup.  I mean. can you even imagine being called in from an afternoon of play in the 1950s for a lunch of a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of minestrone?  No.  Grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of clam chowder?  I doubt it.

It is estimated that Americans make and devour 2 billion grilled cheese sandwiches annually!

So go out and celebrate in your own special way....today is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!  And here is a little song to help you get in the mood!
