He was big, gruff and mean as can be.  He was also a terrific actor.  We remember him vividly as Police Chief Dan Matthews in the hit cop show "Highway Patrol."  It ran from 1955-1959 and was one fo the most popular shows of the decade.

Crawford also was a major movie star.  He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1949 classic "All The King's Men."  He also famously co-starred with Judy Holliday in the comedy "Born Yesterday" the following year.  Near the end of his life he actually made an appearance on Saturday Night Live in a parody of his hit TV series.

Who would have thought that this great big star would have "ended up" so close to us?  Broderick Crawford is buried in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, N.Y. just 63-miles from Oneonta

All TV cops (it seems) had one major saying that stuck wiht them over the years.  From Jack Lord's "Book 'em Danno" on "Hawaii 5-0" to Telly Savalas' "Who loves ya' baby" on "Kojak" these signature lines always seemed to define the cops individual personality.  Broderick Crawford's bark "10-4" into his hand held cop car radio was echoed by baby boomers across the U.S.A. throughout the 1950s (including me!).
