KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say an employee of New York City's Department of Environmental Protection has been shot to death and a co-worker has been charged with murder.

Kingston police say that both men worked in the same area at the DEP's upstate offices in the city, where the shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. They say the weapon was a handgun.

Police say was 33-year-old Aron Thomas of Olivebridge was found dead at the scene and officers took 53-year-old David Reese of Gilboa into custody. He was charged later with second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment later Monday.

Authorities haven't released a motive for the workplace shooting.

The DEP says it's providing grief counseling to other workers.

The DEP offices in downtown Kingston house employees who oversee the city's upstate reservoirs.
