Chenango County health officials are asking residents to be aware of the potential for the West Nile virus.

Although no positive tests have occurred in Chenango County, media reports say the virus was discovered in a mosquito pool in the city of Syracuse on Wednesday.

The West Nile virus is spread through birds and mosquitoes. Birds with the virus are bitten by mosquitoes, which in turn infect humans and animals. The virus is potentially deadly.
