Wastewater Surveillance Moves Chenango to HIGH COVID Risk

Chenango County Health Department is advising residents of an increase in levels of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) in wastewater surveillance data over the past two weeks, prompting an increase in the county's COVID risk rating.

The last wastewater sample was recorded on August 31.

A statement from the health department says officials will continue to monitor the COVID-19 trend carefully but it is important for residents to be aware that the virus is still circulating.

The current SARS-CoV-2 detection level has changed Chenango County’s risk level to Substantial or HIGH.

The health department recommends masks be worn indoors in public and on public transportation.

Chenango County yesterday reported only one additional confirmed case, bringing the pandemic total to 10,771 with deaths unchanged at 125.

Meanwhile, Broome County has recorded two new COVID deaths since Friday, September 2, bringing the pandemic total to 545.  Broome County had 46 new cases to report September 6 for a pandemic total of 64,421.  The number of new cases over the past five days was put at 356 with 32 Broome County residents hospitalized.  Cortland and Delaware Counties each reported six new cases in the Tuesday update and Tioga County reported four.  There were no additional deaths reported aside from those in Broome County.

In the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, Bradford County still shows the highest infection rate and this week recorded 154 new cases and one additional death.  Susquehanna County had 52 new cases and Wayne County recorded 70 new cases over the course of the week.  Bradford’s death toll stands at 216 while Susquehanna County has lost 117 residents and Wayne County has lost 178 to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Many residents are waiting for the rollout of the new booster shot that addresses the more contagious subvariants of the Omicron mutation.  That booster is being rolled out in some areas today.

People are being told to consult with their doctors and pharmacies for availability and eligibility. The CDC vaccine website is also available for finding vaccination locations nearby.
