ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — There's still ice on many of upstate New York's streams and rivers, but trout fishing season is just around the corner.

April 1 is opening day for trout and salmon fishing. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says residents of the state can purchase and print a fishing license from their computers by visiting http://licensecenter.ny.gov . Licenses can also be purchased by phone at 866-933-2257. The annual fishing license fee is $25 for state residents, $4 less than last year.

Fishing licenses are required for people age 16 and older to fish in the state's fresh water lakes and rivers.

Spring trout stocking runs from March through May. You can get a list of stocking sites by county on the Department of Environmental Conservation's website.
