SUCO placed 19th among public colleges in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2023 rankings of Best Regional Universities - North category. SUCO was 75th in the region when public and private schools are ranked together.  Separately, Forbes placed SUNY Oneonta 172 in the Northeast and 217th among all public colleges.

“We are pleased to be recognized as one of the nation’s top institutions by U.S. News and Forbes,” said SUNY Oneonta President Alberto Cardelle in a statement obtained by CNY News. “This external recognition affirms that SUNY Oneonta continues to provide students with an excellent educational experience and the support they need to succeed.”

Cardelle added, “I am particularly proud to be singled out for our focus on undergraduate teaching. Our faculty work hard to provide student-centered learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom.”

SUCO’s strong track record of helping students graduate on time, with low debt, and preparing students for successful careers helped propel the school higher in the rankings.

Among the statistics cited in the reports: on average SUCO students complete their degrees in 4.1 years; 74.3% of students graduate after six years, a rate well above the national average; and 81% were employed and/or continuing their education six months after graduation.

The availability of financial aid was another factor putting the college higher in the rankings. SUNY Oneonta has a comprehensive financial aid program that includes needs and merit-based scholarships for first-year and transfer students.
