Budd has a long career in law enforcement.

His first job as a cop was with the Kansas City police department in 1995. He was briefly with the New York City police department, graduating from the NYPD academy in 1998. Then from 2000 until 2019 Budd served with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.

He has extensive training in criminal investigation, police supervision, internal affairs, media relations, and crisis management. Additionally, Budd has experience in law enforcement response to mental health crises and is a trained crisis negotiator.
