The push for a minimum wage increase continued at the capital on Tuesday as senators of the Independent Democratic Conference as well as members of a caucus of racial minorities declared their support for the boost.

Members of the black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian caucus said their goal was include provisions for an automatic increase in the minimum wage to keep with inflation.

Governor Andrew Cuomo included a $1.50-an-hour increase in his executive budget proposal. He scheduled it to take effect in July.

That would increase the minimum wage to $8.75, but the governor has said he's willing to negotiate the specifics. Business groups say a minimum wage increase would mean layoffs, and offered changes to make an increase more acceptable.
