Sen. Seward Honors Local “Woman of Distinction”
State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref-Oneonta) today honored Peg Ellsworth (above) of Roxbury as the 2019 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” from the 51st senate district.
“Over the years, I have been fortunate to highlight a number of inspirational, trailblazing leaders through the senate’s Women of Distinction program, and this year is no different,” said Senator Seward. “Peg Ellsworth is a true Renaissance woman with a diverse record of accomplishments in business, community revitalization, education, economic development, and tourism. The entire Catskills region benefits greatly from her innovative ideas, tireless work effort, and devotion to others.”
As executive director of the non-profit MARK Project, Ellsworth has helped improve countless lives in the Catskills. Under her guidance, the MARK Project has attained funds totaling nearly $14 million for community projects, flood relief, homeowner assistance, small business development, and Main Street Revitalization. These funds have leveraged additional private and public assets, translating to a $64 million investment in the region. Additionally, in coordination with local municipalities, MARK has assisted income-eligible homeowners make over $2 million in repairs addressing health and safety issues.
Along with leading the MARK Project, Ellsworth has also served on the executive committee of the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council. Ellsworth also operates a local catering business providing professional career opportunities for young residents.
“When the Central Catskills were added to my senate district in 2012, Peg Ellsworth was one of the first individuals I met. I knew instantly that whenever something needed to get done in the region, Peg would be the one to call. I have been proud to work with her for the betterment of the community and look forward to our continued partnership,” Seward concluded.
Along with honoring the 2019 Women of Distinction during a ceremony at the Capitol, the senate adopted a special resolution congratulating the honorees.
The senate's “Women of Distinction” program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
