U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has urged the Department of Justice to create a grant program that would fund tracking devices for families that want to use them.

The proposed legislation is named "Avonte's Law" after the 14-year-old autistic teen who was found dead in the East River three months after wandering away from his school in New York City.

According to pediatric specialists, nearly half of children with autism attempt to wander off at least once every other month.

Schumer says the devices are similar to those tracking Alzheimer's patients and could be a wallet card, watch, or sewn into clothing.
