SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say 24-year-old upstate New York man beat and raped his girlfriend before leading police on a chase through four towns that ended when he crashed a car into the woods.

Police in Saratoga Springs say officers responding to a 911 call around 7:15 a.m. Sunday found a woman who said her boyfriend had beaten and raped her inside her boyfriend's home. Officials say when the officers approached the home, Anthony Smith ran out, jumped into a car that didn't belong to him and sped away.

Authorities say Smith led police on a 30-minute chase that ended back in Saratoga Springs when he drove into a wooded area.

Charges against Smith include rape and driving while intoxicated. He's being held in the county jail on $25,000 bail. It couldn't be determined if he had a lawyer.
