CLAY, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say they're searching for a man who crashed a car into a utility pole outside Syracuse and then fled on foot, leaving behind a friend who died at the scene.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that the two men had left a party in the town of Clay and were going to meet some friends when the car crashed into the pole and sheared it half shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies say the car landed on its roof, partially trapping the passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver fled on foot and is being sought Monday morning.

The names of the driver and passenger haven't been released.

Officials say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
