New York State Reminds Motorcyclists to Renew Registrations

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has issued a reminder to motorcyclists that they must renew their annual registration before it expires and the expiration date is coming up quickly.

If you own a motorcycle in New York State, you will need to renew the registration soon because New York state motorcycle registrations are only for one year and they will all expire on Sunday, April 30.

This is according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles which noted that as the weather continues to warm up, more motorcyclists will want to ride. DMV Commissioner Mark J. F. Schroeder said, “At DMV, we have worked hard to streamline our processes so people can do their business quickly, easily, and conveniently.” Schroeder also noted that the renewal process is easy and only takes a few minutes.

The New York State DMV says that motorcycles must be inspected at least once every 12 months and at a location that the DMV has licensed to do the inspection. Motorcyclists should keep an eye out for a blue and orange or blue and gold sign that states "Official NYS Motorcycle Inspection Station." If you prefer, you can also find state-licensed inspection locations on the DMV website.

In addition to a yearly inspection, motorcycles operated on public roadways must also have liability coverage. Liability coverage is also required for out-of-state motorcycles being operated on public New York roadways.

Keep in mind that motorcycle registrations can’t be renewed if they’ve been suspended or revoked, have expired for more than a year, or if the motorcycle has not been inspected in the last 12 months. If you own a motorcycle that falls into any of those scenarios you will need to register your motorcycle at a physical DMV office or by mail.
