ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Police departments around New York state are increasing patrols and cracking down on impaired and distracted driving over Memorial Day weekend.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that local police agencies will join the State Police in stepping up enforcement over the three-day holiday weekend. Police will be targeting drivers who are distracted by electronic devices or are impaired by drugs or alcohol.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says police will be highly visible. He is urging motorists to be safe on one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

State road projects will be halted during the weekend, though some workers will continue working overnight hours when traffic is reduced.
