While we have been cheered on recently by the news of some of our favorite area events coming back after a year off due to the pandemic, not all large community events are quite ready to make the jump.

The Grand and Glorious Garage Sale has been one of downtown Oneonta's biggest community-wide events for many years.  It is the major fundraiser of the organizer, the Catskill Choral Society, and the event brings dozens of vendors to Main Street and thousands of visitors pouring into town each Fall to have some fun and grab a bargain or two.

Unfortunately the Grand and Glorious Garage sale has been cancelled for 2021.

“It is simply not feasible to hold an event such as this and comply with social distancing guidelines and common sense health/safety practices,” said Chris Shields, president of the Choral Society.  “It is disheartening that we are faced with this situation as we look forward to our golden anniversary 2020-2021 season,” said Shields.  “We had to cancel both our spring 2020 concert and our fund raising golf tournament.  Because choral singing packs people closely together in rehearsals while they are doing a lot of deep breathing, even our fall concert cycle is in doubt,.”

While we can understand the decision that was made by this group we do hope that this iconic Oneonta event, which has been a part of our community for a half century, will return soon.  It was always so much fun!
