The city of Oneonta is taking a close look at how to deal with the emerald ash borer, an invasive species highly destructive to ash trees. The pest was found in Unadilla last month.

Mayor Dick Miller says George Palladino will be a special adviser to the city of Oneonta Common Council concerning this problem.

"George is retired chair of the chemistry department at the University of Pennsylvania," Miller said. "He taught at West Point and Temple University. There are a lot of issue related to the ash borer -- legal issues, financial issues, environmental issues, aesthetic issues. George has a very well-rounded background."

Miller says Palladino will study the situation and make recommendations by mid August. Miller added there are at least 1,000 ash trees in the city of Oneonta
