UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A man who brought a gun into a Utica park and refused an officer's command to drop the weapon suffered a chest wound and died after a series of shots were fired.

Police in Utica say an officer responded to a report of gunfire in a wooded area of Addison Miller park at about 12:15 p.m. Sunday. The officer found a man with a long gun who refused commands to drop his weapon.

Police say shots were fired and the unidentified man was struck at least twice. It was not immediately clear who fired or how many shots there were. The officer was not hit.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams tells WKTV-TV (http://bit.ly/13jbyMx ) the man later died at a hospital after undergoing surgery.

The investigation is continuing.
