Two Hurt When Car Plunges Into Chenango River in Port Crane
A man and a woman were injured when the vehicle they were in went off Interstate 88 and wound up in the Chenango River in Port Crane.
Authorities said the crash occurred just before 11:40 a.m. Friday. A 1991 Honda sedan traveling westbound left the highway near the Exit 3 on-ramp and plunged into the river.
According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, a man who had been driving the car and a woman who was a passenger managed to get out of the vehicle. People who were nearby spotted the two on the roof of the car as it sank into the river.
The woman was rescued from the water and brought to shore a short distance west of the Port Crane exit.
Witnesses reported the man was seen floating on his back down the river. He was pulled from the water by a sheriff's deputy.
CPR was administered to the man before he was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
The man's injuries were described as life-threatening. The woman, who also was transported to Wilson, sustained minor injuries.
