Howard Joseph, Oneonta Doctor for Half Century, Dies at 94

Dr. Howard Joseph, 94, who practiced podiatry in Oneonta for 50 years and was active in the city’s civic life, died Saturday, Jan. 25, at his home following a brief illness.

The son of Harry and Gertrude Joseph, he was raised in The Bronx, and met his future wife, Bernice, while they were both growing up there.  They were married for 73 years.

During World War II, he served in a tank battalion in Europe, and returning home attended the New York Podiatry School.  According to his son, David, he sought out a location for his practice, and settled on Oneonta, opening his office here in 1950.

He was man who lived life to the fullest. He was known for his generosity, curiosity, and caring for others – always giving back to the community. He always had a purpose in life, one of which was caring for his wife and family.

Howard had a passion for so many things, including opera, the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, being involved and supporting Temple Beth El, taking courses at the college, traveling the world, gardening, golf, fishing, tennis, being a voracious reader, pursuing all things that sparked his curiosity and love of learning, and devotion to his many friends.

He was committed to serving the community. He was instrumental in the creation of The Community Health Center, the ARC organization and being part of business consulting team for people starting their businesses through the Small Business Association.

He was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren, who loved him and will miss him every day.

He is survived by his wife, and his three children and their spouses: Leslie and Jesse Kalfel, West Newburyport, Mass.; Stephen and Susan (Bresee) Joseph, Alamo, Calif.; David and Mary Beth (Caufield) Joseph, Oneonta; and grandchildren Leah, Jacob, Danny, Zachary, Trinity and Rickie along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Temple Beth El, 83 Chestnut St., Oneonta, at 2 p.m. Feb. 23.  In lieu of flowers and cards, contributions would be welcome at Temple Beth El.
