Recently Delaware County Deputy Sheriff John Demeo and K-9 "Ozzie" graduated with honors from the Syracuse Police Department K-9 Training Academy after nine weeks and 360 hours of training.

The Academy consisted of training covering Obedience, Agility, Ground Disturbance Tracking and Patrol and Apprehension. With this additional training along with the already acquired Narcotics training certifies "Ozzie" and Deputy Demeo as a dual-purpose K-9 team by The New York State Police.

Deputy Demeo and K-9 "Ozzie" also received the distinguished Sergeant Ron Dalton Award as a "new" or "green" K-9 team for their outstanding, professional and dedicated efforts in the course.

"Ozzie" is named after former Undersheriff Osman Steele who was killed in the line of duty in 1845 during the anti-rent wars in Andes.
