Oneonta Fire Investigators Rule Murdock Ave. Fire Accidental [PHOTOS, AUDIO]

An investigation into Tuesday afternoon's fire at 10 Murdock Ave in Oneonta has concluded. Oneonta Fire Department Chief Patrick Pidgeon said the blaze was the result of unattended or disregarded smoking materials in the living room.

"The fire has been concluded by the Otsego County fire investigation team in conjunction with the Oneonta fire investigation team to be accidental in nature," Pidgeon said. "It started in the front living room area due to unattended or careless disregard to some type of smoking material. There is structural damage throughout. It did go up through the second floor."

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries are reported. Adjacent homes were undamaged by the blaze.

Oneonta Fire Department Chief Patrick Pidgeon said that the department responded to the fire shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday and was assisted by fire departments from West Oneonta, Otego, Laurens, Sidney, Franklin, and Worcester.

"We put in a general alarm for calling back all off-duty personnel," Pidgeon said. "We arrived on the scene four minutes after the call. We called for help from the West Oneonta Fire Department, Otego Fire Department came and covered the Oneonta station; Laurens Fire Department came and covered Oneonta for EMS coverage. We also received help through mutual aid from Franklin, Sidney and Worcester for their FAST teams."

Pidgeon said that one fire fighter was taken from the station to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be released tonight.
